Thinking of buying a 1995 dodge caravan.3.0ci,overdrive trans. what is the cause of a whining noise ?

the sound comes from the transmission side of the engine. also what is the cause of a small clanging sound from the belted side of the engine(sounds like a tiny bell). I know a lot but not about chryslers.
