What was Malcolm X fighting for, was he a formal black supremacist?

Under the Jim Crow laws, blacks were already 'equal but separate'. MLK jr. promoted intergration of all Americans. He was a wonderful peace loving Christian soul. Malcolm X was surely a hate filled, violent man. The worst thing is, even today a large number of African Americans claim to admire Malcolm X more than they do MLK. How can you justify that?
